Parents vs. Dreams

How to choose to be happy in the long run

In this globalized world, there’s nothing which can be considered “out of reach”. People choose the most outrageous careers and find success because that’s what they wanted to do their whole life. As some who do not care about anything which comes in between them and they’re goals, some face a hard time dealing with the things which come in their way. Some people who choose professions which are a bit risky or new or something that not everyone does, that’s where the real problem starts as our parents want good things for us and they want us to pursue a profession which offers stability and not every profession offers that.

Parents also try to get their child to pursue the career that they once wanted to follow but failed, these are the times where the person gets confused. At these times there are a lot of things you can do to make a sound and rational decision.

  1. Try to be empathetic towards your parents- Putting yourself in your parent's shoes is essential as it will allow you to understand what are the factors which are affecting their opinion regarding your career choices. Most of the time there are conflicts between a child and his/her parents because they face a hard time understanding each other’s viewpoints.

  2. Try to find out your skills and dreams- It's important to know what you are capable of and to know about all your skills so that you can refine and improve them. As stated before, in this world nothing is out of reach so it's important to be sure about what you want to follow so you can give your best in it.

The best way to identify your potential is to write them down, You can write all your interests and what you’re good at and what you like to do and then you can notice patterns in it and then you can narrow down everything and then search for career options which are related to your interests and skills.

If you’re facing a hard time identifying them, you can always contact career counsellors and educational organizations and there are a lot of tests and questionnaires which tell you exactly whatever information you want.

  1. Try to have open conversations with your parents- Communication is key in these kinds of situations because most of the time all the damage which takes place happens because of presumptions. Tell your parents your ideas, your thoughts, how you’re feeling and just communicating and clearing every aspect related to your career to increase the chances of a more rational decision taking place. Career is probably the most essential part of your life so have a nice talk with your parents about it, plan a formal conversation with them, tell them your plans, your interests, your strengths, your weaknesses and what you want to do so that everyone can be on the same page and work together and make a rational decision.

  2. Try to seek help from a professional- As stated before your career is probably the most essential part of your life and it will affect the way you’re gonna live your life. So if you end up in a situation where you are disagreeing with your parent’s views and your parents are disagreeing with your views it’s time to call in an expert. Seeking help from a career counsellor can be super helpful as there is an unbiased person involved and they are going to make their decision by stating all the facts. As career counsellors use psychometric tests and different tests to assess different traits of a person, it can be considered extremely helpful and can eliminate all the confusions and disagreements.

MENTAL HEALTH OF STUDENT MATTERS

Worldwide, nearly 154 million people suffer from depression and 106 million meet the criteria for substance abuse (Source: “Startling Statistics about Mental Illness”, from ASHA International Website, 2012.) When a parent sees his/her child in physical pain they will take him to doctor but this case will not be same if the child is suffering from mental illness, because the Stigma attached to the term ’Mental Illness’ create a negative feeling in the mind of parents and students. They would be open to talking about physical unease but not mental unease because of the negative labels attached to it. Our society needs to understand that psychological health is as important as physical health and the combination of the two describes a person’s weal.
